Often after a long day in front of screens and phones, I know I have a headache coming on. Having experiences in the past has taught me that my headaches have been a product of stress and overdoing things. But anything can be a trigger; from a particular fragrance to harsh sunlight, from spending too much time driving to the food you eat.

Headaches are a common condition and many people deal with them daily. Ranging from uncomfortable to downright unbearable, they can disrupt your life. It’s great if you can identify your source of cause and control it. However, it is not always possible to stop them but you can control how you treat them. Next time you find yourself facing a headache, how about trying a home remedy before you reach out for that tablet.

Here are 7 home remedies that you can conjure at home to make yourself feel better when you have a headache.

1. Drink water

Inadequate hydration may cause a headache. In fact, chronic dehydration is a common cause of tension headaches and migraines. Studies show that drinking water has been shown to relieve headache symptoms in most dehydrated individuals within 30 minutes to 3 hours.

2. Get adequate sleep

Sleep deprivation can be detrimental to your health in many ways, and also cause headaches in some people. A study showed that people who get less than 6 hours of sleep tend to have a more severe and higher frequency of headaches. Make sure you get enough sleep of about seven to nine hours to keep headaches at bay.

3. Soothe the pain with a cold compress

Use a cold or a frozen compress around the neck or the head where it’s hurting to decrease inflammation and pain. This slows nerve conduction and constricts blood vessels, all of which reduce headaches. To make a cold compress, fill a waterproof bag with ice and wrap it in a soft towel.

4. Drink coffee

It’s a proven fact that coffee improves mood, increases alertness, and constricts blood vessels. All of this can have a positive effect on headache symptoms. If you take it along with common medicines that are used to treat headaches, it can increase its effectiveness. However, people suffer from caffeine withdrawal symptoms as well if you drink large amounts of coffee on a regular basis and then suddenly stop.

5. Relax with yoga

Taking up yoga can help reduce the intensity and frequency of headaches. One study investigated the effects of yoga therapy on 60 people with chronic migraines. Head frequency and intensity were all reduced in those receiving more conventional care alone.

6. Try ginger tea

Ginger root contains many beneficial compounds, including antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances. Ginger also helps reduce nausea, vomiting, and common symptoms associated with severe headaches. You can take the ginger powder in capsule form or make yourself a power tea with fresh ginger root.

7. Get some exercise

One of the simplest ways to reduce headache frequency is to keep yourself physically active. You don’t have to run or lift weights to do this, you can just increase your steps per day. One study found that 91 people in a study found 40 minutes of indoor cycling three times a week was more effective than relaxation at reducing headache frequency.

There can be many natural ways to treat your headache and it’s best you use them. You may begin by finding out what decreases the frequency of your headache, and gradually work your way through.

Yoga, supplements, essential oils, and dietary modifications are all-natural safe and effective ways to reduce headache symptoms. Choose whatever helps you the most.
