Open Letter: To Everyone On My Friend List

Who said that online friends aren’t your real friends? Here’s to all of you!

All the people on my friend list

Most of you are strangers to me. Many of us have attended the same school or college but it’s possible that we might not even remember each other. I might not know most of you beyond pleasantries, but I know you. I am not sure if this makes sense or not, but I know you because I’ve seen and enjoyed your posts on my feed. I see your beautiful profile picture updates, I laugh at the memes that you share, I know which book you’re currently reading, I know what your dog’s name is, I know which movies interest you, I know which fandom you belong to. I know when you’ve had a fight or are having a bad day because you’ve got this peculiar habit of sharing memes only when you’re upset about something. Because that is what social media is, it lets you get involved in someone’s life without being a major part of it.

It’s strange, isn’t it? How you feel like you know someone by just seeing a fraction of their lives. I’ve have had a conversation with a couple of you, and I was surprised at how much we have in common. With a few of you, the only interaction I’ve done is in the comments, maybe debating over a topic which definitely is important to the both of us, or just sharing a light-hearted moment. Some of you, I wouldn’t even have met if it weren’t for Facebook. It all started with a simple hello, or you making a witty comment on one of my posts, and now, to think of it we’ve become really good friends.

I know that when we scroll through our feed, it becomes difficult not to compare ourselves with others. We fall into this cycle of thinking that everyone else has a better life than we do. Ironically, the other person is having the same thoughts when they look at your posts. We forget that most of the things that we see aren’t even close to reality. I am sure that all of you are much much funnier, prettier, smarter, and happier than your social posts.

Whenever this happens, whenever you feel down and doubt your worth, just remember that you’re intelligent, you’re funny and you’re cared for. I know who you are is not what you portray in your posts. But what I do know is that you’re an amazing person. I know that no matter who you are, where you’re from, you deserve to be happy. You deserve to smile every moment of your life the way you smile in your posts.   And please feel free to share this with all your social media friends and let them know that they are loved. We should all stand for and with each other because that is when we are strongest.
