The outside changing world and our unchanging routines have surely brought a work culture that not a lot of people have been able to cope with. With work-from-home demands increasing, evidence suggests that the working hours have increased as well. And it looks like a lot of us may continue to work from home in the coming time as well.

So, we’ve got 5 smart working techniques to make this time as efficient as possible

The Big Three

Every morning, break your day into three big tasks that you need to achieve on priority. Note them down in your to-do list and give yourself a deadline to achieve the task within the day. What this does is it helps to draw focus to the work that really matters and larger breakdowns seem more manageable than a cluttered to-do list. It also gives you a sense of control over your work, making you work deliberately and not reactively.

Embrace the Increase in Meetings

To shift into a full work-from-home operating model, many companies have enforced an increase in meetings. May it be with clients or in-house meetings, studies have proven that there’s been a 12% increase in meetings within the organisations. We as employees need to embrace that without the organic way of in-person conversations and team huddles, Zoom calls or impromptu/scheduled video calls are vital for functionality.

Break Time

Keeping the focus on work can be difficult at times and with our current situation, distractions seem to come in various forms. To keep your head in the game and optimise your working hours, focus on one task and set a timer for 25 minutes. Once the time is up, reward yourself with a 5-minute break after which you can start your next timer. After the fourth timer, give yourself a 15-30 minute break. What this does is increase focus and remove distractions by conditioning the brain to work in an efficient manner, motivated towards a reward.

Don’t Let Go of Routine

You may have heard or read this before but this may be one of the most important elements for keeping a systematic control over your time. By developing a routine, you avoid mundane tasks taking away from your working hours. This is especially important for those who live with others who are functioning according to their work or school timetables. This routine will help you retain a small part of your pre-covid work life, making the process of logging in and logging out easier.

Practice Your Boundary Setting Skills

This should be done at work as well as at home. When working from home, it can be easy to get lost in between the space of professional and personal. To avoid this, maintain a work-life balance that allows you to separate the two. Discuss with your partner or housemate what time is your work time and when you can be available for other tasks. Similarly, speak with your manager and discuss what times should be allotted for meetings and work and what time is allotted for your home. Setting these boundaries, in the beginning, will help with work efficiency and also prevent you from burning out.

Everyone is going through this time with more than just work concerns. By respecting people’s privacy and practising a little consideration, we will get through this tough time together. By managing your time efficiently, you can experiment with how to make these circumstances work for you in these trying times.
