When it comes to DIY, at-home remedies, apple cider vinegar ranks high on most people’s list of curing ingredients. Made by fermenting the sugars from apples which in turn converts them into acetic acid, vinegar being the active ingredient. While apple cider vinegar isn’t a new remedy, it has been used for decades and more, people are recently becoming more aware of the impressive health benefits it boasts.

Moreover, people are constantly seeking new ways of improving their health and lifestyle and apple cider vinegar seems like a pretty universal solution for most issues. It’s been used in different beauty, household and cooking recipes for years and is also a good agent for cleaning, washing hair, preserving food and improving skin function.

Most commercially available apple cider vinegars usually come labelled as ‘filtered’ or ‘unfiltered’. Filtered, which is pretty self-explanatory, means it comes in a clear liquid while unfiltered means it contains something called the ‘mother’. Apple cider vinegar that comes with the mother contains proteins, enzymes and bacteria which gives the liquid a cloudy appearance.

What are the health benefits of apple cider vinegar?

With the end of the year celebrations right around the corner, apple cider vinegar can become a great addition to your home thanks to its amazing benefits. It serves as a great way to combat delicious but heavy meals but also works are an amazing cleansing agent for that after-party clean up.

Below, you’ll find the top 5 benefits of this magical juice, however, it should be noted that some of these results and findings are based on studies conducted on animals.

1. Manages blood sugar levels

Studies have shown that consuming cider vinegar after a carb-filled meal can improve glucose and insulin levels. Apple cider vinegar has also apparently helped people with diabetes regular their blood sugar levels. However, if you’re under medication for diabetes, it’s best to check with your healthcare professional before consuming cider vinegar.

If you’d still like to consume ACV to regulate your blood sugar, try drinking 2 tablespoons of ACV mixed with water with a small meal or snack.

2. Makes you feel full

While there isn’t any specific evidence backing the claim that ACV aids weight loss, some interesting studies have examined the dietary effects of vinegar. One reason is because ACV tends to make you feel full quicker, helping you eat less calories, lose weight and reduce belly fat in turn. This can also work as a way to regulate your diet as ACV helps battle sugar cravings but be aware that the long-term effects on weight loss are unknown unless you focus on making significant changes in your diet and lifestyle.

3. Balances cholesterol

Studies conducted on animals to research the effects of ACV suggest that vinegar improves blood triglycerides, cholesterol and blood pressure. However, research doesn’t back the same claim for humans yet, having insufficient support.

4. Soothes a sore throat

A sore throat can easily be treated at home with an apple cider vinegar gargle. Vinegar has great antibacterial properties that could help kill off the bacteria that causes the sore throat. However, when consumed undiluted, it can be very acidic and can cause throat burns.

5. Improves digestion

Apple cider vinegar is phenomenal for digestion as it helps get rid of heartburn, reduces bloating and improves your overall digestion. When you experience discomfort and pain after a meal, it means your digestive system isn’t working well. A proper digestive system consists of proper acid levels in the stomach to ensure complete nutrient absorption. Drinking or adding ACV to your meals helps increase acid production and aid digestion.

How can you consume apple cider vinegar?

Before you head off to down a glass of apple cider vinegar, let us inform you that drinking ACV the wrong way can work against you. Drinking it straight can burn like fire, instead mix a tablespoon of vinegar with 1 cup of water and then drink it through a straw to not let it burn your taste buds. If you’re not a fan of chugging vinegar water, we’ve put together a few easy ways you can add the goodness of ACV to your diet.

1. Salad vinaigrette

The easiest way to consume apple cider vinegar is to make a simple salad dressing. Homemade salad dressings are way better than store-bought thanks to their lack of preservatives. Plus, it often tastes better and is much healthier for you.

2. As a post-meal drink

Drinking ACV before a meal can make many nauseous. Instead, drinking the concoction after a meal can help you feel full quicker, curbing your urge to overeat while also avoiding the queasy feeling ACV brings.

3. ACV tea

Looking for a way to quit your caffeine addiction? ACV added to tea makes for a great alternative to other caffeinated drinks, especially lattes and sodas. Try mixing 2 tablespoons of ACV with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne pepper with a glass of warm water. The acetic acid boosts energy and can prevent you from reaching for caffeinated drinks first thing in the morning.

It’s safe to consider ACV a booster instead of a miracle. When consumed in small doses, the acid can be extremely beneficial and delicious. But in large amounts, it can be dangerous and harmful to your health. We recommend consulting a healthcare professional before starting with apple cider vinegar, especially if you’re considering ingesting it.
