Karan is an Arts student and an athlete as well. He is into athletics and the University basketball team. In order to up his protein intake, he would include loads of eggs, chicken and milk into his diet. Even though this helped him gain muscle and strength, Karan had to empty his bowels before every competitive match. Karan is just like any other 21 year old and enjoys eating delicacies of all sorts. He loves cold coffee and often finds himself in a puzzled state before a match.

Normally, he doesn’t have the urge to use the washroom after drinking milk.

Why does he need to go to the washroom before every match? Is he stressed? Is there something on his mind? Why is his bowel movement so irregular? Let’s find out.

What is IBS?

To put it simply, IBS is a very common disorder that affects the larger intestine. Signs such as cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhoea and constipation become very common. Not just this, your bowel movement and timings may also increase dramatically. One may have mucus, or increased gas in the stool.

But, does Karan have an infection or allergic reaction?

What many people don’t know is that IBS is also because of stress. Early life stress has shown to be a big factor in showing more symptoms in people. Even though Karan may not need to visit the bathroom on a normal day (after consuming chicken, eggs and milk), he may have to go before every competitive game. The game could make him nervous which in turn triggers his bowels.

IBS may not have very severe complications but when not managed properly, it can lead to a poor quality of life and even mood disorders. Depression and anxiety can also make IBS worse.

What can you do if you have IBS?

  • You may need to identify what is causing you stress and what is causing you an allergic reaction in your stomach. The role of food intolerance isn’t completely understood, but many have worse IBS symptoms when they eat or drink certain foods or beverages including wheat, dairy products citrus fruits, milk and even carbonated drinks. So, watch what you eat.
  • Learn to control your stress. Indulge in activities that make you smile and feel good. Make sure to get some sun every day. You may find yourself a hobby where you can sweat it out or keep or keep yourself busy. Find things that engage with you regularly, and where you can contribute both mentally and physically.
  • Practice meditation to relieve stress and understand that it’s the effort that matters. What is in the past can’t be undone, what is next you must work towards.
  • Try probiotics as they bring a sense of relief to your gut and digestive tract. You can also include more fibre in your diet for good gut health.
  • If your IBS is not being easily controlled, try therapy and see how it works out for you.

Moreover, remember nothing is worth the stress that is making you feel upset. Believe in yourself, tread softly and find your way around it.
