Skin, the largest organ of our body, is the easiest to observe. Whatever happens on the inside of our body, gets reflected on the surface – our skin.
These five skin conditions might seem generic, but they can be clear indications of something much bigger.
Itchy bumps and blisters
If you have itchy clusters of bumps and blisters on your elbows, forearms, knees, or buttocks, it’s a chronic skin condition that arises due to celiac disease. The person may also experience diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and cramping. It’s called dermatitis herpetiformis and requires medical attention.
Dark skin patches
If you notice thick, velvety patches near your neck or armpits, you might be at risk of diabetes. Acanthosis nigricans, as it’s scientifically called, is the most common way that diabetes manifests the skin. You may also want to look out for other symptoms like brown spots on the shins, yellowish pea-sized bumps on the body, or thick, waxy skin on the fingers, hands, and toes.
Sores
Sores begin healing themselves as soon as they first appear on the skin. But, when they don’t heal, heal really slowly, or return, then it’s a problem. They indicate that you might have poor blood circulation, immune system, diabetes, or even skin cancer.
Rashes
The most common skin condition, that can be triggered by literally anything under the sun if you’re allergic to it. Food, medicine, jewellery, perfume, insect bites, heat rash, and many such things can lead to rashes. But if you develop a rash across the nose and cheeks, it’s a sign of lupus – an autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks the organs and other body tissues.
Bluish tinge
If your skin around the face or lips is developing a bluish or purplish hue, it means that oxygen-rich blood is not reaching your skin. It can be because of an underlying heart or lung disease, which can be best diagnosed by a doctor.
Consult a doctor immediately if you or anyone you know shows these skin conditions. You might successfully catch a growing disease and get timely treatment.
