It must be a zillion times I hear my children claim that they are getting “bored”!! Keeping children entertained these days is a tedious task for both the child and the parent. With summer vacations approaching, we all must be planning ways of keeping our kids engaged in a positive influential manner.
How to keep your child busy during holidays:
#1 Make your own games
Get a supply of coloured cards, glue and scissors and make any game you want, like ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’, ‘Snakes and Ladders’, ‘Hoopla’, etc. can be made easily at home and keeps the child occupied for quite some time
#2 Cooking and baking
One of my personal favourites. At least once a week, plan a cooking or baking day. Involve the children in the process from the very beginning. Let them choose what they want to cook/bake and let them read the ingredients and steps. Try to let them do it all the way.
#3 Gardening
Dedicate a small patch in the garden and give it to your kids. Let them play the role of the gardener, tending to and nourishing their plants. Let them plant seeds and water it.
#4 Go on picnics
Plan regular picnics for your kids. If you don’t go out too often, you can have one at home. All you need is a blanket and some yummy snacks. Let the children make their own sandwiches and decide their own lunch.
#5 Create a ‘summer diary’
Encourage your children to keep a summer diary, wherein they can pen down their thoughts and activities at the end of each day. This will hone their writing skills and also keep them busy for hours. They can also take photos of special days and write about them.
#6 Paint
One common thing most kids love is to get absolutely dirty while painting. Give them an apron, paper and paints and let them paint to their heart’s content.
#7 Go swimming
During these hot summer holidays, one of the most cooling activity would be to take your children swimming. This will also turn out to be the most fun exercise they would ever have done.
#8 Visit the library
One of the best habits you can inculcate in your children is the habit of reading. Take them to the library and make them pick out their own books. Assign a few books each week. This will keep them busy for one whole week, and then assign new books.
#9 Organize play dates
Plan some play dates and invite friends over. This encourages children to mingle and play with kids of their own age and make friends.
#10 Have a chill day
With all the activity planned, kids will also need some slow down time. Make sure you plan days where you just enjoy doing nothing or just watch a movie.
