Prateek Kuhad making it to Barack Obama’s playlist of the year is just evident how far the indie scene has come in 2020. More and more musicians can be seen releasing their music and the majority belongs to the hip-hop and rap genre.

Here are 5 indie artists to watch out for in the year 2020.

Formed in Delhi around 2010 by Suryakant Sawhney, the band has grown to be one of the most reputed ones in India. To be honest, one cannot classify their music into a specific genre since they keep evolving with each release. From gypsy jazz to psychedelic cabaret, the band as done all. They have come a long way from their first album called, “Sinema”. They hit it off the park with their last album “Bismillah” which was critically acclaimed. We can only wait and watch what PCRC has in store for 2020. Interestingly, Suryakant also has a side gig which has gained many fandoms. His solo project under the name of Lifafa is where he experiments with his social and political ideas and is brought out through the genre of dance and electronic.

Releasing their first mixtape in 2017, “2 ka pahada” was released amongst much fanfare and they cemented themselves as one of Delhi’s superior artists. The bi-lingual duo is following in the trailblazing hip-hop collectives of Run The Jewels and Blackstar. Having mastered sharp, apt and combative witty rhymes; Seedhe Maut represents the next stage in the evolution of India’s hip hop scenario.

An urban ecologist by day and musician by night had hearts twirling with her latest release, Poetry Ceylon. Aditi Veena aka Ditty and her folk-tinged songs are organic and earthy quality reflecting her firm belief in music as a tool for change. She garnered quite a lot of attention with her song, Deathcab.

One of the most under-rated artists in India, Dhruv Bhola who is also a bassist for Peter Cat Recording Co., guitarist for Prateek Kuhad and Run It’s the Kids has taken to the name Bowls to release his own music. He launched his first album in 2019 which was received very well among the indie scene. His first song from the EP Shed Winter received a marvelous response on YouTube. Having more music coming out in 2020, he’s definitely someone to look out for!

Prabh Deep

Behind the juicy beats and the smooth vocals is one of India’s best underground MC’s, Prabh Deep. Born and brought up in Tilak Nagar, his music paints a picture of growing up in a locality that is reeling in high unemployment rates and a recent increase in the influx of drugs in the community. His early critical successes led him to be one of the faces of the music streaming giant, Saavn and Apple Music featuring him as the spotlight artist of the month.
