Education is a basic right, and all should have it. However, not everyone has access to it. The South Western Railway in Mysuru has transformed two old coaches into classrooms. These are used by the Railway Colony Primary School to educate impoverished children.

For many years the students of the Railway Colony Primary School had rooms inside the residential area as their classrooms. But now they have new ones, two train coaches that function as classrooms. These are complete with a small staircase outside the coaches for children to climb up. The interiors and exteriors are painted brightly, there are fun illustrations and the classrooms also have lights and fans. One classroom has been fitted with teaching aids while the other is an activity hall; there are two bio-toilets as well.

The government school had been struggling to hold classes since it did not have a building of its own. It also saw its enrolment drop. However, the South Western Railway stepped in by offering the coaches that were officially declared unfit for use, as classrooms. The railway officials say that this is a first-of-its kind initiative in India.

P Srinivasu, Chief Manager, Railway workshop, Ashokapuram, said that for over 20 years, the government school was holding classes in buildings of the railway quarters in the premises. These coaches were refurbished to give a fun and favourable environment for learning, he added.

These new ‘classrooms’ function as ‘Nali Kali’, a strategy by the Karnataka government to help retain children in school while also get those not attending to enrol. The classroom was inaugurated last week. The railway employees volunteered to refurnish and donate them to the Railway Colony Primary School.

A great and eco-friendly way to scrap old coaches besides encouraging education, especially among the economically weaker students.
