Is Mount Everest Really The Tallest Of Them All?

This is a subject under constant contention with three other mountains. Read on to know about them.

We all know that Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain on earth, but the truth is, there are three more mountains in contention of this title. Standing at 8849 meters, Mt. Everest is the pinnacle of every climber’s dream.

This dream is under constant scrutiny because the other three mountains can very much be the tallest mountain in the world. It all depends on the point of reference. Whether you measure from the base of the mountain to the summit, or it’s the elevation above sea level, or its distance from the center of the earth. All of these points of reference affect the title of the world’s tallest mountain. Could this mean that perhaps, Mt. Everest is one of the tallest mountain peaks in the world?

Mt. Everest, in Nepal, stands at 8849 meters or 29,035 feet above sea level. And indisputably reaches the highest altitude.

Here’s the fun part, Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island, reaches a staggering 33,947 feet.

Yes, you read that right.

What makes the difference is the point of reference; when measured above the sea level Mauna Kea measures at 13,796 feet which means much of the mountain is underwater. This makes the Hawaiian giant at least a mile taller than Everest.

Another contender, which might be a little confusing is Chimborazo in Ecuador. Measure at 20,703 feet, which is clearly shorter than the Everest. Earth isn’t exactly a sphere, however, and since Chimborazo is on the brink of the equator, this mountain rises from nearly the widest stretch of our planet. Technically speaking, Chimborazo is the highest mountain above the center of the Earth—no less than 1.2 miles farther away from Earth’s core than Mount Everest.

So, what is the highest mountain peak in the world?

I guess you’ll have to climb all three to find out!
