‘Drink water’ the alarm in our phones or our FitBit bands reminded us. We may not be the first people to tout the benefits of drinking an average of 4 litres of water a day but we’re going to do it anyway. Despite knowing the umpteen benefits of staying hydrated, somehow we always end up forgetting to go through with it and our stressful lives are a big part of the why.

The general rule states that you should consume at least 8 glasses of water a day. And no, this does not include cups of green tea, bowls of soup or water-based foods that you may consume during the day. A pure glass of water not only promises the healthiest skin you can have, it also aids digestion, helps with weight loss and reduces fatigue, among other benefits.

So how do you go about getting your daily dose of 3-4 litres a day? Read on to find out.

Check your urine

The first thing that nutritionists and doctors suggest when monitoring your water intake is to keep an eye on the colour of your urine. If your pee ranges from very pale to light yellow, you’re drinking a healthy amount of water and if it’s bordering on too clear then you’re consuming too much fluid. But be aware that vitamin B or foods like beetroot may alter the colour.

Drink water to kill hunger

We often reach for junk food to kill boredom rather than hunger and during times like these, reaching for water instead can help you keep this unwanted hunger at bay. Not many people realise but our tendency to overeat also arises from thirst and having a glass of water before every meal can help you eat rationally. So, the next time you feel the urge to grab a snack, grab your bottle of water instead.

Refill after every trip to the loo

One of the drawbacks of drinking 3-4 litres of water a day is the fact that you’ll want to pee almost all the time. And while using the bathroom that much in a day doesn’t sound fun, it can work as a reminder for you to consume your next dose of water. After every trip to the loo, come back and have a glass of water and you’ll exceed your daily water target easily.

Keep a bottle close at all times

Think of your bottle of water as an extension of yourself. Just like you don’t miss any chance of taking your phone along everywhere, make your bottle of water your companion for wherever you’re headed. And for days when you’re not leaving your home, keep it at your work desk so that it serves as the perfect reminder to keep sipping water all day.

Set reminders on your phone

While this may sound extremely silly, let your phone remind you that it’s time to drink water. Our busy lives have us scrambling for things and drinking water can be one of the many things that we add to our to-do but forget about. So, just like you have multiple reminders that keep you up to date on your day’s meetings, set hourly reminders to have a glass of water so that you don’t miss out on your daily dose of hydration.

We don’t need to be scientists to tell you that our bodies are made up of 80% water and so it just makes sense that consuming water in abundance can help replenish our bodies, especially after the amount of toxic junk and ingredients we put into it. Start by thinking of it as a challenge to better yourself and we promise, the benefits and results you’ll see on the way will convert you into a water-lover in no time at all.
