People look at poor mental health, the same way they look at world climate change –it does not exist. The stigma, the ignorance and the ‘it’s all in your head’ attitude has made a lot of people keep their deepest emotions from surfacing.

But shaking this very belief, Virat Kohli recently spoke about this mental health during his 2014 England tour and said that he “felt like he was the loneliest guy in the world.”

It presses on the point that it can happen to anyone, even to those whom we feel have made it in life or have everything they want. It’s mental health, and sadly there is no privilege here.

If only we built a more cohesive environment for people around us, the taboo topic of mental health will cease to thrive.

Here are some signs of depression to look out for, either for yourself or your loved one.

  • Feeling low or down in the dumps nearly every day.
  • Significant diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities, be it hobbies or sports.
  • Significant weight loss or weight gain for no apparent reason. The person may also suffer from hypersomnia (sleeping too much.)
  • Some people exhibit, psychomotor agitation, like constantly fidgeting with one’s clothes, pacing, restlessness. Some have the exact opposite called psychomotor retardation. This includes the slowing down of one’s movement or talking very quietly with slowed speech.
  • A depressed person feels tired and loss of energy nearly every day, even while doing the smallest of tasks.
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt while ruminating over past mistakes.
  • Depression causes a decrease in a person’s ability to think, concentrate or even decide.
  • Recurring thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, or even a suicide attempt at the extreme are symptoms of extreme clinical depression.

If you or anyone you know exhibits these signs, please do not hesitate to seek professional help, they are there for you, they will listen.
