It’s true that it’s never too late to realise one’s dreams. And, 94-year-old Harbhajan Kaur is a fitting example of that as she started earning money by making sweets.

This nonagenarian became an entrepreneur about four years ago and started earning money by making sweets. Encouraged by her daughter to start her own brand ‘Harbhajan’s—Bachpan yaad aa jaaye’, the spunky lady makes organic besan ki barfi.

She busts all myths about age by her desire to start her own entrepreneurial venture. Hailing from Chandigarh, Harbhajan Kaur, once told her daughter, Raveena Suri that she had never earned a penny herself. Her words affected her daughter who encouraged Kaur to start her own brand ‘Harbhajan’s—Bachpan yaad aa jaaye’. As a result, today, the 94-year-old makes organic barfi made out of besan, while her daughter sells it in the organic market in Chandigarh.

Suri says that when her mother turned 90, she softly made a comment about earning money on her own and becoming self-reliant. Moved by this, Suri decided to help and encourage Kaur to make homemade sweets and sell them. Kaur’s daughter reminisces about the childhood days when her mother made all the confectionaries at home. She recalls the times when their dining table was full of barfi, which is also Kaur’s signature dish. Everyone remembers Kaur through her ‘besan ki barfi’, says Suri.

Starting when she was 90, Kaur’s signature dish practically flew off the shelves in the market. And, at 94 today, she takes orders for pickles, chutneys, marmalades, and sweets. Kaur believes that life is all about evolving and you do new things when you learn something new. She says that her ‘besan ki barfi’ remains her signature.

The story of this entrepreneur has become so popular that the Chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra, named her the ‘entrepreneur of the year’ on a micro-blogging site. At an age, when most people spend their time leading a completely ‘retired’ life, this nonagenarian is like a breath of fresh air.
