You may have heard people tell you to go for a walk when your head is muddled with thoughts. Or maybe, advice about practicing yoga and exercise keeps coming your way whenever you try to look for ways to clear your mind. But have you ever wondered why physical activities are advised when it’s in fact your brain that needs work? The reason behind physical labour to mend matters of the mind is the connection between the body and the brain. Physical manifestation of emotional pain is not an uncommon phenomenon.

The mind-body connection is the most essential one to be taken care of. They both affect each other in every way possible. There are many reasons you should be in control of your emotions that impact your mind and then hamper your physical health. It affects you in many ways.

Physical manifestation of emotional pain

Shortens the life span

Mental illnesses have the capacity to affect the years that you have left in your life. An analysis by the psychiatrists of Oxford University has shown that several mental illnesses can reduce 10-20 years from your life, something expected as an adverse effect of heavy smoking.

Slowed down stamina and self- healing

The scientists at Ohio State University researched that a 30-minute argument with your partner can slow your body’s ability to heal itself by at least 24 hours. The researchers say that this is a result of cytokines, the immune molecules. When you argue with a loved one the cytokine production shoots up. Increased number of cytokines can also cause long term diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.

Aches and pains

Depression or being sad constantly, can cause aches and pains in your body. Dr. Jane Flemming based in London says: Low mood is linked to low levels of serotonin and dopamine, the feel-good neurotransmitters in the brain. Serotonin plays a role in regulating pain perception and could be the reason why 45 percent of patients with depression also suffer aches and pains.

High blood pressure & anxiety

Excessive anger prolonging for a long time can prove to be harmful for you. While bouts of anger sprout your stamina for a little while, anger suppression harms you. A study published by Research Library Publication in 1995 says that even a 5-minutes episode of anger can damage your immune system.

But it’s not just extremes like depression or anger that have a long-term impact on your body. A simple act of laughing your heart out can also change things inside your body. Dr. Lee Berk of Loma Linda University in California discovered that your human growth hormone can rise by 87 percent when you laugh your heart out.
