A visit to NASA or ISRO is always an ambitious dream for the common man. However, this teenager, inspired by former Indian President and nuclear scientist, APJ Abdul Kalam, is set to visit NASA in May this year.

Hailing from the village of Pudukkottai in Tamil Nadu, from a humble family, K Jayalakshmi, is the sole bread winner of her family. She supports her mentally challenged mother and younger brother by giving tuitions to younger students and selling cashew nuts in her free time. Studying in class 11 in a government school, she does not have a father. She even learnt English by taking coaching for the language for a month.

And now, this conscientious student is set to make a trip to NASA in May 2020 through a competition she participated in. She came across the competition organised by Go4Guru by chance when she was practicing for a carrom match. Jayalakshmi says that during her practice for the match, she just happened to glance at a newspaper lying around, which carried a piece on Dhaanya Thasnem. Thasnem, from Madurai, had bagged a chance to visit NASA last year through a contest where she was one of the winners. This got Jayalakshmi interested and she quickly registered for the competition.

However, this dream was not easy to realise as she had to first collect a certain amount of money for the visit. And, coming from an economically challenged family, it was difficult for Jayalakshmi to come up with it. But when her story spread, help started pouring in through various quarters. So widespread was her tale that even the Collector of Pudukkottai stepped in to raise funds for this brilliant girl’s trip. Even her teachers and students helped her with getting the passport done and the officers at the passport office too offered her some money.

Jayalakshmi wishes that in future, her life should be a reminder to all the students from government schools to dream and aspire to achieve them. One only needs to put in hard work and be determined for it. We couldn’t agree more.
